There are many analytical papers and researches done in the field of examining and analyzing consequences of the Sarbanes Oxley Act (2002) and some done in the corporate governance in some Latin American countries. This paper chooses a different approach. First, it selects The US, Brazil and Chile, which represents for Latin American countries, as three (3) American countries to analyze their best suitable policies and corporate governance practices, in consideration of factors after crisis and scandals. Second, it aims to build a selected comparative set of standards for corporate governance system in the US and representative Latin American countries. Last but not least, this paper illustrates corporate governance standards that it might give proper recommendations to relevant governments and institutions in re-evaluating their current ones.corporate governance standards, board structure, code of best practice, financial crisis, corporate scandals, market manipulation, internal audit

A Set of Limited Asian Pacific Corporate Governance Standards After Financial Crisis, Corporate Scandals and Manipulation

Up to now there are some researches done in the field of giving a framework of implementation of corporate governance standards after corporate scandals, negative market manipulation during the post-crisis periods. This paper mainly concentrates on empirical research for findings in this field. First, it comes up with four (4) groups of findings on corporate governance subjects in the post-crisis and post-scandal time. It found out that companies in these periods have certain corporate governance issues such as how to better organize an information disclosure system. Second, it compared and identified differences in current and latest corporate governance standard system in four (4) countries in Asian Pacific region: Japan, Australia, Philippines and Korea. Third, this paper provide with a short summary of evaluation of current corporate governance principles in these four countries which can enable corporations to seek and to compare to their current codes. Last but not least, it aims to realize a limited general set of standards of Asian Pacific corporate governance and give proper recommendations to relevant governments and organizations.Corporate governance structure, CEO, Chair, principles, Board of Directors, Compliance, Internal audit

Investigation of Views on Mental Health Treatment Seeking

Although research exists regarding barriers to mental health care for individuals with depression and anxiety disorders, few studies have compared characteristics of those who seek treatment versus those who do not seek treatment for psychological distress associated with these disorders. Such studies are needed in order to better understand factors involved in treatment seeking and treatment abstention. The present study addresses treatment seeking and treatment abstention in individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD) and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), in order to understand barriers to treatment in this population. Results indicate that the groups did not significantly differ on their gender, finances, sexual orientation, ethnicity, and grade classification. Results also suggest that those who seek treatment associate less stigma with mental health than those who do not seek treatment. Finally, both groups prefer to handle their own problems and think that their problems would eventually resolve themselves. These results may be helpful in informing outreach and prevention efforts targeted to an MDD and GAD population

Automated Mapping of UML Activity Diagrams to Formal Specifications for Supporting Containment Checking

Business analysts and domain experts are often sketching the behaviors of a software system using high-level models that are technology- and platform-independent. The developers will refine and enrich these high-level models with technical details. As a consequence, the refined models can deviate from the original models over time, especially when the two kinds of models evolve independently. In this context, we focus on behavior models; that is, we aim to ensure that the refined, low-level behavior models conform to the corresponding high-level behavior models. Based on existing formal verification techniques, we propose containment checking as a means to assess whether the system's behaviors described by the low-level models satisfy what has been specified in the high-level counterparts. One of the major obstacles is how to lessen the burden of creating formal specifications of the behavior models as well as consistency constraints, which is a tedious and error-prone task when done manually. Our approach presented in this paper aims at alleviating the aforementioned challenges by considering the behavior models as verification inputs and devising automated mappings of behavior models onto formal properties and descriptions that can be directly used by model checkers. We discuss various challenges in our approach and show the applicability of our approach in illustrative scenarios.Comment: In Proceedings FESCA 2014, arXiv:1404.043

Thermal degradation study of silicon carbide threads developed for advanced flexible thermal protection systems

    Get PDF
Silicon carbide (SiC) fiber is a material that may be used in advanced thermal protection systems (TPS) for future aerospace vehicles. SiC fiber's mechanical properties depend greatly on the presence or absence of sizing and its microstructure. In this research, silicon dioxide is found to be present on the surface of the fiber. Electron Spectroscopy for Chemical Analysis (ESCA) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) show that a thin oxide layer (SiO2) exists on the as-received fibers, and the oxide thickness increases when the fibers are exposed to high temperature. ESCA also reveals no evidence of Si-C bonding on the fiber surface on both as-received and heat treated fibers. The silicon oxide layer is thought to signal the decomposition of SiC bonds and may be partially responsible for the degradation in the breaking strength observed at temperatures above 400 C. The variation in electrical resistivity of the fibers with increasing temperature indicates a transition to a higher band gap material at 350 to 600 C. This is consistent with a decomposition of SiC involving silicon oxide formation
